Stratford, May 2, It was confidently anticipated that tlie by-election yesterday would result in the election of -Mr. R. 11. Cameron, but very few anticipated the majority would be so large. Backed by a strong commit- I tees of ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Cameron was in clover compared with his two opponents, who relied on their own popu- | Jarity and past services to secure their return. Mr. Richardson, who was making a first attempt at municipal honors, polled very well, but the voting yesterday demo'nstratfid to Mr. Solo that his past services have been forgotten. In returning thanks, Mr. Cameron said he hoped at the end of his term, the burgesses would find that their confidence in him had not been misplaced. there to do what ho could to assist in the work of the borough as a whole. He thanked his opponents for the clean manner in which the contest had been decided- Mr. Richardson briefly, but sincerely, thanked all those who had favored* him with their support. GENERAL. There was a great crowd of ladies at the station this evening, and it was learned that they were there farewelling Mrs. Murray" Urquhart. The wedding of Miss Edith L. Hine, eldest daughter of Captain J- B. Hine, M.P., to Captain Murray Urquhart took place at Toko in the morning. Mr Layard, of Pungarehu, was best-man, and Miss D. Hine bridesmaid. Captain Urquhart is a well-known and very popular officer, who was ivalided home recently, and hopes in due course to return to finish his contc t with Kaiser Wilhelm. In the meantime, he and his bride have the best wishes of the whole district for a successful and happy career in their married life.
The Mahoe factory workers lined up at Mr- Oliver J. Worth's residence on Tuesdav and wished him all sorts of good luck in going into camp, and wound up the speeches with a fine' silvermounted pipe. The recipient thanked his comrades for their gift, which he immediately put into use. The York road School proved all too small for the attendance at the concert held last week. The school children took a big part in the programme, and contributed action songs and a cantata The White Garland," whilst enjoyable items of a miscellaneous nature were contributed by Mesdamcs Walsh and Balsam and Misses M. Volzke and E Hayes and Messrs I*. Evan, P. Doduraki, T. Potroz, and A. Crofsky, A. dance followed, and the profits (£4), with the subsidy, will bo spent on improving the grounds. Messrs R Bine and A. J. Chainey have been appointed by the Minister of Lands to succeed Messrs D. Bain (in camp) and Gconre Cleary (killed in action) on the Toko Domain Eoard.
