ELTHAM.

(I'l'oiu Our Own Correspondent) KUhain, April "28. In moving thai the Mayor (Cr. T. B. Crump) should receive the usual honorarium, £OO, Cr. l'arrott remarked at the last council meeting that he would like to ?ee the Mayor receive a larger urant, particularly in these war days.' Cr. l'arrott lias been Mayor of Kltham and has an idea. i>f the out-of-pocket expenses entailed, besides the great amount of time the efficient carrying nut of duties conscientiously involves. The vote was passed, hut probably in the near future the amount may lie larger. In replying, Cr. Crump stated that" he could not <!0 to the front, but was or* sisting in other directions, and quite realised his position required a considerablc amount of time for patriotic work.

Some time back a committee of the council was set up to consider the Public Library question. ''Your Own" knows nothing aibout the librarv, but the public reading room is a .-li'sgraee to the town. Certainly it is cleaiC but instead of having a fair range of newspapers there are three daily papers, one tri-weekly (Taranaki), ami a Salvation Army Gazette. Probably were it not for the Daily News, the'place would be deserted. As it is, a lot is required to make the room attractive, and it would seem a good move for the council to take control—the sooner the better for the town. Ratepayers would gladly subscribe to a rate that would make the reading room a credit to the town.

The annual meeting of the Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company. Ltd., will be held in the Athenaeum Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. H. ]). Forsyth, chairman of directors, will preside.' A good attendance of shareholders is expected.
