In addition to the usual stocks, 1 the flower stall and a sweets and fancy i apron stall, assisted largely in the j general effort,. The day's takings amount- 1 ed in round figures to £165. . A num- A ber of special donations were received, \ and these, with the society's, thanks to i tliose who gave special assistance,' will * be duly acknowledged. May J and Arrowsmith, made a special appeal ' on behalf of blind soldiers' and'-sailors. 4. The chief means used in their'effort con- -i sisted of a display and sale of ehrysan- j themum blooms. (Some particularly fine 4 flowers were on show, and they met * with a ready sale, the large supply l'e- A ceived : being cleared out almost to a bloom- Amongst the donations sent in were some specially fine blooms from. , Mrs. if. Ramson, Mrs. J. Scanlon, Mr: C." Goodsbit' (Hawera), arid the. Inglewood Women's Patriotic, Committee, the latter sending two large cases. The Imperial Meat Stores sent along on Saturday morning a whole carcase of lamb, cut and priced, ready for sale. A number of special donations were received,, including 'lO guineas from Mr. C: H. Burgess arid' £lO from. Dr. Leatham.' A novel feature aft connection with the appeal was the "penny trail," which ex-, tetnded along both sides of Defon street,: from Currie street to Brougham street. The "trail" was in charge of fho boys of the 2s T ew Plymouth High School, and; in a quiet way they sueoeeded in ex- S tracting the sum of £45 12-s 3d from 1 passers-by. The main street: of. the | town was well "chalked" with notices | directing attention to the "trail," and , the kerbing of the .street in the section along which the "trail" was laid was, as the clay progressed, literally covered with coins. • The pennypieees totalled £1!), so that there M'as raised about 4% battalions (4560) of pennies- There were many things on sale i n addition to the, chrysanthemum blooms,.the other gif in including a number of baskets, j mats, and pois, sent irv by a Maori Jj sympathiser.,.
