RAID ON ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, April 27. The police raided the confectioner} shop of Frederick Jones and Williau Whitten, who appeared in court chargei with using the shop as a common gam ing house, and were remanded till Tues day. Bail was allowed. Wellington, April 27. AN IMPORTANT JUDGMENT. Wellington, April 27. Magistrate McCarthy gave judgment to-day in a ease in which a man was charged with failure to render personal service under the Defence Act, 190!). He had been called up for service in the Expeditionary Forces, and classified permanently unfit. The magistrate said that defendant, having been called up under the Military Service Act, 1!>16, became a member of the Expeditionary Force, and had beeh given indefinite leave. That being so, no officer in the Territorial force could call on him to train as a territorial. Further, as examinations proved him unfit for service overseas, it followed that he was physically unfit for training as a Territorial. The information was dismissed. INDUSTRIAL ASSESSORS. Wellington, April 27. A Labor deputation waited on Mr Massey (Minister of Labor) in regard to assessors and travelling allowances in connection with industrial disputes. It explained that exception was taken to the proposed regulation which would practically restrict a union's selection of assessors to experts obtainable within the district wherein the dispute arose. Mr. Massey said some settlements had been at comparatively high cost. The proposed regulations provided Ihat fees and travelling allowance!) should be only for the time necessary for travelling, and work within the district concerned in the dispute, but the Conciliation Commissioner would have authority to permit engagement of outside assessors by certifying in writing that it was necessary, obligation being placed on the Commissioner to notify. Mr Massey said he would consult with the Secretary of Labor on the matter. |
