HIGH SCHOOL REBUILDING FUND.
To the Editor. Sir,—A suggestion has been made that the influence of the householders at tonight's meetings for the elecl'on of school committees might very properly and advantageously be used to urge on the Government the urgent necessity of subsidising the amount of public subscription being raised to complete the Boys' High School buildings. To complete the school in a manner that will make for efficiency will cost £12,000, towards which th'a Government has voted £SOOO, which* with the insurance money, only provides a total of a little over £7OOO, The pubtic has within the past fortnight provided a further £2550, making the total amount available something under £lO,000. The Government has, in the mean- ' time, turned down the citizens' committee's request for a subsidy, without advancing any valid reason. The interests of the State schools are, closely interwoven with those of the secondary schools and householders are entitled to insist that the facilities provided for their children's education in the High School are not less efficient than has been provided in other districts. The hands of the citizens' committee would be greatly strengthened in again approaching the Government with their reasonable request if the householders affirm by resolution in public ■ meeting the injustice with which the Government is treating this proposal.—l am, etc., JAS. McLEOD, . Hon. Sec. Citizens' Committw,
