.AIONTHLY MEETING.. The Borough Council mot on Friday evening. Present: —'The Mayor (Mr. T. 1!. Crump) and Crs. 11. C. Carman, .J. Balantyne, A. Beesley, II- II- Judd, M. Parrott, T. C. Staners, G. W- Tayler, C H. White, and M. A. Whiteford, CORRESPONDENCE. T. Thomas, headmaster of the Eltbam District High School, fonva/ded circular letter requesting the council's support to the New Zealand Educational Institute's efforts to bring about some valuable and needed improvements in the cause of education in New Zealand. —Letter .received, and resolution carried as desired by institute. Hawera Hospital and Charitable Aid Board notified a levy of Is Id in the £ 100— Received. The Premiei thanked the council for the resolution advocating the retention of that part of the Samoan Group taken from Germany, and intimated that he would impress these views upon the Imperial authorities. —Received. The New Zealand Farmers' Union requested the council's assistance in their endeavour to get the Department of Agriculture to insist on the regulations under the Noxious Weeds Act being complied with—The council will do all it can in the matter. C. Burle, overseer, reported that the road leading to the (bridge on the Mountain road had been tar-sealed and the railway crossing asphalted. A start had been made on the footpaths west of the railway" and two boggy corners in Bedford street cleaned. The staff had been short-handed, and will necessitate employing temporary hands to complete necessary work before the winter. Straying stock had created a fair amount of trouble.—Adopted. George Heaven, poundkeeper, stated that since last report he had impounded 24 bead of stock, 23 being released and one, a horse, sold, realising 5s 6d- Fees, received totalled £0 -2s (id, and expenses 245. He complained that a rail had been removed from the enclosure fence. —Received. G. J. Marriott, gas manager, reported that the make of gas was 360,150 cubic feet, an increase of 45,400 cubic feet for the same period last year. The number of consumers was 347. A severe smashup happened to the No. 2 gas engine on March 24. Spare parts being unprocurable in New Zealand, the damage was made good by Mr. Vosseller's engineering works.—AdoptedCr. Carman gave notice to move:— "That the minutes of the Finance, Works, Pictures, and Reserves Committees be read at each ordinary meeting of the council, and treated as the reports of the respective committees," but, after a brief discussion, the motion was withdrawn. The Works Committee recommended That the overseer see that water valve* are put in order, and that the placinfi of sijns over roadways be left to the discretion of the inspector: that a -water meter be installed at the bacon factory for a 12 months' test, the charge to be regulated at a price per 1000 gallons, and that a charge of £35 for past year be levied, the company to pay half ordinary water rate.—Adopted.
