The writer recently asked Mr. E. A. •Pearson, the well-known X.S.W. amateur long distance road rider and holder of the remarkable cycle record of 49 hours from Sydney to Melbourne, why the variable speed gear has not caught on in this country, considering its many undoubted advantages for touring and its great popularity in England. Mr. Pearson, who is a great believer in the variable geared hub, and is still using the identical gearing and machine used in his 1810 lirter-State record, expressed, the opinion that want of judicious use, stopping on the top or medium gear too long when climbing hills is the chief lack of appreciation. Many a rider has tried the variable gear but gone back to the fixed gear simply because he had not learned the art of correctly utilising the three-geared hub. Air. G. E.
