BOWLING.
THE STRATFORD CHAMPION. In winning the Singles Championship last week, J. S. Rowe has demonstrated that he is a champion singles bowler. He had to meet five men in the finals, and his runaway victory over Sharp, winner for the last two years, showed that the ev-Aucklander was right up to form. Against Bickerton and Morison, Rowe had easy wins, but with Jackson, also a new man to finals, Rowe had anything but a comfortable bout, and it was only in the last two heads that he got ahead of his opponent. Although well in the sixties, J. S. Rowe is a very active man, and when not bowling in the daylight he is singing before the footlights, and is one of Stratford's most popular comedians. In Auckland he was successful in winning the first-year championship of the Rocky Wood dub. In the 'BO'S he was a Rugby footballer, and later on played Association football, being captain of one of the first four clubs formed in Auckland. He represented Auckland in 1892 against Wellington and Otago, and has played against Canterbury at Christchurch. He knows something about cricket, too, and was a member of the Alpha Club which won the cap and badges for two years, and as captain of the Hobsonville Club, gained a (fbat and shield for the best all-round player. He was a runner of no mean order, and a fair horseman, having woii leaping contests in various competitions at -agricultural shows. Altogether » versatile man. The following rinks will represent Fitzroy in the challenge banner match against Pihama:—Jury, Dingle, Renncll, Abbott (s.); Healy, Bennett, Smith, Price (s.).
