(From Our Own Corresiiondent.) I All communications, letter;;, etc., led v.lth Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive promut attention.] April 22. HOSPITAL BOARD. A special meeting of the board was held this morning, present:—Messrs. .1. M'Allister, C. IX Sole, E. Walter, R, j M'K. Morrison, C- 11. Finnertv, F. J. Mackay, and E. W. Hancock. On the motion of Messrs. Walter and Sole, Mr. J, M'Allister was re-elected chairman. Tenders were accepted for tlie supply of groceries, also funerals. The matron's application for additional room for nurses was considered, and a resolution passed that the time k approaching when large additions will have to be made to the bospita 1 ., and, until then, the hoard does not consider it advisable to take action. A$ the preparations of returns under various headings are becoming so frequent, it was resolved that the Health Department be written to protesting against the constantly-increasing wortj entailed on the secretary in this direction. GENERAL. An inquest was held last week on the body of Tom Rawfootham, a roadman, w*ho was killed by a fall of sandstone whilst working in the Tangarakau Gorge, Whangamomona. The evidence disclosed that death must have been instantaneous, and a verdict to this effect was carried. The body was interred in the Whangamomona Cemetery on Friday. All Whangamomona and outlying districts were strongly represented at the farewell tendered 'Mr. A. G. Fawkner who is leaving the district. In the last seven years Mr- Fawner has used his office hours looking after the interests of the Bank of Australasia, and in his spare momenta ho has battled hard for patriotic purposes. The news of his departure created a good deal of surprise and regret, and at the social tin guest of t'he evening had to listen to rj number of eulogistic speeches concerning his ability as a business man and a war worker. In the absence of Mr. W. M'Cutclien, the duties of chairman were capably fulfilled by Mr. A. Coxhead, who wound up his complimentary remarks by presenting Mr. Fawkner with a silver tea service. Regret was expressed that Mrs. Fawkner was unable to be present through being out of the district. The recipient neatly and with feeling expressed regret at leaving "Whangamomona, where he had spent so many pleasant years, and thanked all for the; handsome gift and good wishes. The evening passed very pleasantly, and this was duo in a measure to the vocal items by Me3dames Nolan and L. Bacon and Mr. Fawkner, whilst Mr. T. Taylor gave a recitation. The floor was in good order for dancing, and the music—piano Mrs. Morine, cornet Mr. Morine, and violin Mr- Schneider—all that could be desired. Don't spoil that picture or photograph for want of a frame. Rather enhance its value by purchasing a photograph frame at C. E. James' fancy goods warehouse- He will fit all sizes so don't hesitate to make enquiries- Have you seen the Ucan Haircutter? Cuts to any degree of length. Just the thing for the soldier in the trench, and for the home. 1
