DEFENCE EXPENDITURE COMMISSION.
CANTEEN MANAGEMENT. By Telegraph,—'Press Association. Wellington, April 20, Before tlie Defence Expenditure Commissioners to-day, Captain A. Fairhairn, a merchant in' civil life, president of the Canteen Committee, stated that since the Government took over the canteens prices had been reduced, and the stocktaking after the first month's working Showed a reduction of 31 per cent. The net profit for the first month was £1221, of which £640 was paid into the canteen fund for distribution, the balance being held for abnormal expenses. The prulits during the next three months 'were £ISOO. The men were supplied ! with the best quality goods at reasonable prices, and under the old rates the canteen proprietors would have been paying £13,000 a year to the canteen funds, agains £BOOO by the authorities Under the present scheme. But against this apparent loss of £3OOO, there was a direct saving of purchasing power to the men of £24,000 a year. Canteen wages and all other charges were met out of canteen funds. Witness, dealing with other questions, said departments appeared to bo working against each other in some respects.
