ELTHAM.
Rom Our Own Correspondent.) Eltham, April 19. hard-up social held at Kaponga on Thursday evening proved one of the most enjoyable and successful functions yet held there. There was a large attendance of dancers, visitors coming from Eltham, Manaia and Mangatoki, and all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Held with the intention of building up the funds of the Eltham District Patriotic Appeal, the takings at the door amounted to £27 7s Cd. Prizes generously donated by Kaponga-ites, for fancy dresses, attracted a fair amount of competition, there being many quaint and original costumes worn that night. Prizes were awarded to the following: Miss Queenie King, "Washerwoman," 1; Mrs. Fife, "Irish Biddy," 2; Miss Lowe, "Coster Lady," 3. Mr. Alex. Melville, "Out and Out Hard-Up," 1; H. Areda, "Patchful Percy," 2; W. Bailey, "Aboriginal," 3. The funds were increased by the sum of £8 19s generously thrown
on a flag held by four girls, while singing a song with a patriotic appeal. Veryacceptable vocal items were contributed by Misses Hilda Tait and Connolly and Mr. 6. Lyall. The music for the dance was all that could be desired, and was contributed by Mrs. McCarty (violin), Messrs. McCarty (piano), F. Woods («'ornet), M. Bates (double base). Enjoyable extras were played by Misses J. Melville, Humphries and Brant and Mr Humphries. The duties of M's.C. were entrusted to Messrs. Bertie and G. Lyall, who saw that all present thoroughly enjoyed, themselves. Thanks are due to Messrs. A. and H. Thomas, for generously donating materials for the "hard-up" supper. Judging by the enthusiasm displayed, a few more "hard-up" socials would be welcomed by the dancing community. I regret to note that Private T. Walsh, son of Mr. W. Walsh, one of Ngaere's veteran farmers, has been wounded in the recent heavy lighting in France, and is now in hospital. His injuries were received on the 3rd instant, and there are many who will read these lines with regret, and trust that before long the Ngaere soldier will have shaken oil the effects of the Hun "memento, anil in due course be enabled to return to his parents and friends in his usual health.
