HINDERING WAR PREPARATIONS. THE DEATH PENALTY. Washington, April 18. A Bill has been introduced in the United States Senate providing the aeath penalty for persons interfering with war preparations.

AUSTRALIAN WHEAT. AMERICA NEGOTIATING. Washington, April 17. The question of utilising Australian wheat if the necessary shipping is obtainable was discussed by the Agricultural Department and the Shipping Board.

The United States has purchased 100,000 tons of shipping from Japan, the delivery of which begins in May and continues till September. One hundred and fifty thousand tons of .Japanese shipping is also being chartered. Efforts may be made to divert many of these ships to the Australian trade, but definite action will not be taken pending a conference with Mr. Hughes.

Baron Burian is returning to the Ministry of Finance and will succeed Count Czernin.
