MANAWATU MEETING. FIRST DAY'S RESULTS. THE SCRATCHING OF BIPLANE. STRONG RESOLUTIONS CARRIED.

By Telegraph.—Special to News. Palraerston N, Last Night. The first day of the Munawatu autumn races "was held iu perfeel weather, there being a record attendance fo'r the autumn meeting. Time were large fields and good racing, but. »reat disappointment was felt at- the scrawling of Biplane in the Gold Cup, the crowd hooting the horse, owner, and trainer tor some time before the race. Desert Gold received a great ovation, and Mr. Dowry was carried shoulder high after the presentation of the cup.

The following resolution was carried by the stewards in connection with the scratching of Biplane: "The stewards consider that the explanation r,f Mr. Greenwood and his trainer (K. J. Mason) of the scratching of Biplane on the eve of the ra~-e entirely unsatisfactory. They are further of opinion that «n occasion has arisen which is contemplated by the provisions of sub-section 11 part 4 of the nib's of racing, inasmuch as whilst the letter, of the "law lias not been infringed, the true ethics of raping have been grossly violated. The stewards regrot that the provisions of sub-section I! do not authorise them to disqualify Biplane for the meeting, but they recommend the committee of the Manawaiti Racing Club to exercise its power under sub-section '.I of part 16, should occasion | arise/and to decline all future nominations from Mr. Greenwood of trny of his horses, or of any horse which may be Gained by R. J. Mason.''

The following resolution was also carried: ' ; That all bets on, the Awapuni Gold Cup recorded prior to the scratching of Biplane be declared cancelled."

BIPLANE LOOPS THE LOOP.

(By "Moturoa.") Here (in Palmevston) at 1030 a.m. on Wednesday are gathered together representative* of sporting communities of all parts of New Zealand, with a sprinkling of Sydney-siders and others from across the I'asman. And on all sides one reads dismay, disappointment, and even anger "a the faces of this cosmopolitan crowd.' And little wonder! Though the morning papers recorded the news of the eleventh hour scratching of Biplane, whoso proposed meeting with the New Zealand idol, Desert Gold, in to-day's (Wednesday's) Awapuni (told Cup had attracted tiie above-mentioned cro* i. to Palmerstcn, many people were either at headquarters or had completed arrangements to get there before the bombshell 1 fell. "Has Biplane broken down?" is asked on all sides. That is tlw only excuse which could be accepted by Hie'crowd— Rood sportsmen as they all are. But no; no such excus2 is offered. The only reason for the withdrawal of the muehbooiued colt appears to bo that B. J. Mason (trainer) considers the colt has not undergons a thorough preparation for a mile and a quarter journey! Tin n why was the .public fooled? Why was the Maikvatu Racing Club made thelaughing slock of Australasia? Is Biplane's party AFRAID of Desert Gold? These questions would take some answering here to-day!

According to the Manawatu Daily Times, Air. G. D. Greenwood arrived at Palmerston by the Auckland express on Tuesday afternoon., and after consulting Ins trainer, Mason, decided to scratch Biplane. This was accordingly done at 7,30 p.m. It is, however, understood that Biplane will be a starter in the lliniawatu Stakes on Thursday. Xovv, what do you think of that? " Do you wonder that tho crowd is angrj? Mr. G. 1). Greenwood, is quite Within his rights in scratching his horse, but seem» that Mr. T. H. Lowry has brought his mare thousands of miles to ensure a meeting that would be famous throughout racing history in Australasia, it shows poor sportsmanship, to sa>r the very least of Mr. G. I?. Greenwood's action.

TARANAKI DISTRICT COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Taraiifki District Committee was held at the office of the secretary, Mr. E. 1». Webster, on Tuesday evening. Mr. L. A. P\ Elundell.

The disqualification imposed by the Taranaki Jockey Club on the horse Jiu •litsu owing to its ownership being incorrectly stated in the Waitara Hack Hurdles and Okoke Hack Hurdles at the last Kcbruary meeting of the club, was iqilirdd. The disqualification applied to the two races mentioned, in both of which •Jiu .iitsu ran third. A list of fines imposed by the Opuuaicc Racing Club was approved. R. Silk \\a-> granted a jockey's license and an apprentice's license was granted to A. E. ].■■« subject to certain conditions.
