ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent,) Eltham, April 18. The days of the large mushroom have arrived. Two were brought in from Ngaere last week that were prize growths. One weighed lib 2oz, and the other 14oz, and attracted considerable attention while on exhibition in the window of Mr. J. Skipper's shop. The skating carnival hold in Wilkinson's Hall last night attracted a large attendance of performers and onlookers. The entertainment was raised with the intention of building up Eltham's quota of the patriotic appeal funds now being raised in the district. Considerable interest was taken in the contests, which were relished by all, and although Mils were numerous, the damage was slight. The results of the races were: Men's race, half mile: Whiting (Hawera) 1, F. Parsons (Eltham) 2. Parsons fell, otherwise the finish might have been closer. One mile: firaham 1, Whiting 2. Couple race, half mile: Whiting and Miss Connor 1; F. Parsons and Miss Heaven 2. Best costume (ladies): Miss Peebles (Good Luck) 1, D. Lewis (Ragtime) 2; men, Whiting (Speight's Ale) I, Parsons (Goliywog) 2. Most graceful couple: Whiting and Miss Connor I; Miss'Romerville and partner 2, Xorthover and Miss Perkins 3. The greasy pig was decided in two heats. In the fir.-t Curtis caught the slippery porker, and in the second bout Harrison triumphed. The final also saw Harrison declared the winner by laying the pig by the heels—or ears.
Te Koti's list towards the patriotic appeal now stands at .£B2 lis, while several from that town have subscribed to Llthain lists. Local lists include collections by (J. Coplcstoue, totalling £l7 fts (id, L. N. Fairhall's list £2l ss, while Omoana lists total £27 and Mangamingi £2O. Mrs. Whiteford lias been very energetic in her canvassing, and has brought her total to £:!2 !)s Oil. The total is now in the neighborhood of £1550.
Mr. T. B. Crump (Mayor) presided at the meeting of the Eltham Patriotic Committee held last evening. An applicant was granted a pension of £1 week, and his case was recommended to the Pensions Board for favorable consideration. The action of the treasurer in granting temporary relief and clothing up to £2.'5 wjis confirmed. Awatuna was granted permission to affiliate with the committee and to have two delegates. It was resolved to circularise all the district with a view to having all contributing towns represented 011 the committee.
There a]>p<>ars to bt> a prospect ahead of trouble Hvising between the filtham County Council ami its employees. In the past the men have been paid wet and dry, and now the council desires to pay for actual time on work only. At least that is the position outlined to "Youv Own." It is a pity the men did not wait on the council at Saturday's meeting. As it was, they approached the chairman later on in the day, with the desire for a reply on Monday. The council is considering the matter, and a decision may be made on Wednesday. ,Tn the meantime the settlers are assisting in keeping the roads open, and it is no light task, as slips in the Mangamingi Valley are numerous after the recent heavy rain.
