MAGISTRATE'S SALARIES.
INADEQUATE RETIRING ALLOWANCES. By Telegraph.—'Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation from the law societies, headed by Sir .John Findlay, waited 011 the Minister of Justice regarding salaries and appointments of magistrates. It was suggested that better men were required for the magistracy, and could not be got at the present salaries. They should be paid from £BOO to £9OO. The retiring allowance uas also too small. The Minister said he wanted to make a great change in the magistracy. Several magistrates would be retiring on account of age. If lie could get the Government to ag(ee to the principle of altering the superannuation so as to make the retiring allowance one thirtieth instead of one sixtieth for every year of service, a great part of the difficulty would be overcome. He had said in Parliament that the salary of metropolitan magistrates should be £IOOO. However, before he dealt with salaries he ought to deal with superannuation. The matter would receive his attention.
