PUTTING THE SCREW ON. STATEMENT BY SIR JOSEPH WARD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In tlic House of Representatives tonight, replying to Mr. Pearco, Sir Joseph Ward said the compulsory clauses of the Finance Act would apply to ¥.f. nine and a half millions' now being raised, also to twenty millions to be raised shortly. The contribution of six times the amount of, land and income tax was put in as a maximum to give people some sort of guide as to the amount expected of them, but the amount would be decided by the commissioner, after correspondence with the taxpayer. Those who contributed four and a half times the amount of their land and income tax to the previous loans would be treated with consideration 111 present or future loans, but he wished to make it 'plain that it was not a matter to be .trilled with. Money must be obtained. He was hopeful that the ,Eft,500,000 loan would be subscribed, but he did not think it would be easily done. This was only natural, as where large sums, were required quickly one after another they were more difficult to get, but lie was satisfied there was plenty of monej' in the Dominiop
