WAR LOAN MATTERS.
APUTE SHORTAGE OF SHIPPING. (By Telegraph. —Our Parliamentary Keporter.) Wellington, Saturday. "The war loan is not anything like suflipiently substantial," said the Ministar tor Finance in the House to-day. "I feel that it is necessary to say that the position should be Understood. The Minister added that he intended to put th? compulsion clause into operation without any hesitation or partiality!. The financial shirkers, whoevei they might be, would have to provide their share of the money required for war purposes. A new clause provided that the payment of the penalty for failure to subscribe shall not relieve the person from the obligations of subscribing. A definite warning regarding the difficulties of the shipping position was given in the House to-day. Sir Joseph Ward said members must realise that shortage of shipping was going to be much more acute in the future than in the past. That was a fact that had to be faced.
Mr. Massey, speaking at the table, said he wished to remind the Housa that there was going to be a very serious shortage of shipping during the next three month?. He hoped that this special difficulty would not last longer. There was going to be a more acute shortage of shipping than Xew Zealand had experienced in the past, and there was no escaping that fact.
