Hr. Paget said he had pleasure in moving that the council had acted wisely in taking Mr. Sturrock's advice, and that the council proceed with the work, giving Mr. Slnrrock control and abiding by his decisions. With the consulting engineer in charge he had no doubt the work would go on satisfactorily Mr. X- ,T. King paid that with (lie work placed in capable hands they would have a good road. He would like to hear if Mr. Sturrock had practical experience in concrete work.
Mr. Sturrock said it would not ho necessary to cut up the street for the water main* A 2in. pipe could lie put under the footpath and connected with the mains at •"> chains interval. Or; Paget said it was possible Mr. ?t.urrock might not have had sufficient information about the frequency of leaks occurring, and this might give r<e>ons for seriously reconsidering the positionIn reply to Cr. Masters, Mr. Sturrock :aid the mains were a little to the side : n the main roads and caused no trouble. The macadam was easily repaired. It was desirable to have the mains in the middle of the roads. This motion was also carried. Mr. Percy Thomson said he desired to express hi? appreciation of the action of Or. Paget. who had probably saved the borough thousands of pounds. At the previous meeting he thought Dr. Paset was inclined to he frivolous, and desired to make this acknowledgment.
The Mayor asked Dr. Paget, whether lie desired a vote 011 th<> matter, but Dr. Paget paid he appreciated Mr. Thomson's remarks and it could stand at that.
GENERAL. A letter to liis parents here from a soldier in the Aotta Convalescent Home Egypt. gives great praise to the care and attention shown the inmates there The writer lavs great stress on the financial interest shown in the Home by the Wairarapa and Wanganui folk, and reckons the remainder of New Zeaiani is under all obligation to these districts for assistance. He relates also that a cake, made by a Wairarapa school girl, was put up for auction and realised £261, and this was placed to the Home funds. The writer concludes that if the Tarannki peonle don't make a move in the matter, the TaranaVi soldiers will be for ever under nn obligation to the good people of Wanganuiand Wairarapa.
Private fllen Sangster. who has been invalided home for \some weeks now, left for Wellington this morning. At the Fmnire City be will undergo medical examination
A silver cup, on exhibition in the N.Z. Clothing Factory's window here, has attracted cnns'derable attention. It was brought back from the front by Captain J. TJ. Hine Ivf.P., and was won by Trooper Jones, of Tuna, in connection with sports held in Egypt. The cup is a hnn'icnui,. one, nicely inscribed with the winner's name and a description of the event. The tropbv should prove a valuable memento in the years to come bv Trooper Jones, and his relatives at Midhirst are naturally very pjeased at bis success.
Great efforts are 'being n-.ade to score a big success by the Stanlev Road (Beaconsfield Road) settlers, who purno«o hnldimr a parden fete in the afternoon, concert in the evening, and a lance to wind-up. Proceeds are to go to the Aotca Convalescent Home.
