FOOTWEAR CHARGES.
THE MANUFACTURERS' VERSION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night.
In reference to the complaint made by retailers and repairers concerning the Increased cost of footwear in Christchurch, and the allegation that the manufacturers were taking advantage of the elimination of outside competition, a prominent manufacturer lias supplied the following information as to the increase that has taken place in the cost of materials at the present time, as compared with those ruling at the outbreak of war, which, he said, fully explains tha increase in the cost of footwear. The increases are: Sole leather 52 per cent., chrome leather 100 .per cent., kip leather 50 per cent., glace kid ICO p«- cent., pat•■nt colt leather 140 per cent., leather lining (good quality) 300 per cent., linen lining 400 per cent., threads 250 per cent. eyeleta 250 per cent., trass rivets 30 per cent., machine tacks iOO per cent.', j hand tacks 300 per cent., heel tips 750* per cent, plugs 400 per cent., machine parts an average of 300 per cent, ranging from 100 to fIOO per cent-, needles 3IW per cent., wages (war tonus) 12% per cent.
