WESTOWN PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION.

ANOTAL mreting. Tho first annual meeting of the Westown Progressive Association was held last night in the West End. bowling pavilion, when Mr. .T. D. Sole presided over a good attendance of members. REPORT. The claimed credit for being' mainly responsibla for the carrying out of the following important* works in the district: Remetalling and tarring of Staiulish Hill, remetalling of Wallace Place, a portion of Cutfietd Road and also Tukapa Street for its entire length, while other important works are to he undertaken, viz., forming and metalling Outfield Road, and repairs to footpath in Tukapa Street; also, in conjunction with Vogeliov/n, the provision of a motor service for the two districts, an order having been placed by the Borough Council for the bus, but owing to the difficulties in shipping the bus has not arrived yet. 'Piic committee also assisted in obtaining a school at Wcstown, and in conjunction with the West End School Committee, waited on the Minister of Education in connection with the removal of the present. West End School to a site on Outfield Road, adjoining tho Western Park, and it is confidently hoped that the transfer will be brought about in tho near future. Other matters had also received attention, the association having more than justified its existence. Regret was expressed at the death of Messrs. H. (ioodacre and 11. Stocker, both of whom were members of the association, to which they rendered splendid service, and their deaths are a distinct loss to the district. The balance sheet showed a credit 'of £1 14s Bd.

In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman stated that a considerable amount of good work could be done if the association enlarged its sphere by combining with the other associations in the town and forming a ratepayers' association. He thought that in the policy of the Borough Council there was too much taihon, therefore the best value for money expended was not obtained. Mr. W. Bennett seconded the adoption of the report, which was carried unanimously. OFFICERS. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. .T., 1). Sole (re-elected); lion, secretary and treasurer, E. B. Reid (reelected) ; committee, Messrs. J. S. S. Medley, W. H Browne, A. J. Coad, W Bennett, J. Garcia, J. Lobb, W H. Haddrell, F Fisher, Medway, V. Elliott, C. A. Smith, F. S. Johns. Five to form a quorum. GENERAL. The president stated that he understood a number of members were appealing against their valuations, and he suggested concerted action. This was agreed to.

It was resolved to draw the Borough Council's attention to the urgent need for gravelling tlfe footpath in Tnkapa Street before the coming winter, and also for improving the approaches to Dartmoor Avenue and Price Street.

It was resolved to place on record the association's appreciation of the services rendered the district by the late Messrs H. Stoeker and IT. Gooilacre. Votes of thanks were accorded the president and officials for their services during the past year, to the chairman, the press, ar.d the West End Bowling Club for the use of the pavilion.
