STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Uopiiins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] Stratford, April 10. HOSPITAL BOARD. The Hospital Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs J. McAllister (chairman), C. D. Sole, I{. Mclv. Moriso Jb E. K. Einnerty. The matron's request for a cupboard was granted, and,jt was decided to deal with the question of two extra rooms for night nurses at a special meeting, the aub-eommittee to submit plans and estimates. Tenders were accepted for milk and meat supplies to the hospital, that for groceries being held over, and the matter of funerals being left to the chairman and secretary. Nurse Griffen's resignation was accepted with regret and steps are to he fcaken-vlo fill the vacancy. The necessity for heating the hospital was again discussed and the following resolution carried: "That this board expresses its strong disapproval of the Department in regard to the manner in which the 'board lias been treated in reference to heating the hospital by a hot-water service, the plans having been submitted twelve months ago and up to the present no reply approving of the expenditure has been received or any suggestion of amendment thereto." The chairman stated that ivhen in Wellington some time back he was given to understand that a reply would he available by the February meeting, yet the board was still awaiting the Department's pleasure.

The Minister for Hospitals forwarded circular desiring full knowledge of the financial position as between the Hospital Board and the Department, and desiriflg a statement of balance owing to the board at March 31, 191S, for treatment of soldiers and discharged men.— Received, and Minister to be thanked for the clear statement.

F. W Flanagan, Valuer-General, stated that the capital rateable values of the various contributory 'districts for the purpose of apportioning the levy for lillß-10 were: Stratford borough, £527,519: Stratford county, £2,03b,148; Whangamoinona county, £519,715. —Received.

Hawera Hospital Board thanked the Stratford Board for having received diphtheria patients from Hawera. owing to not having having room for their reception there. —Received. Dr. Steven, medical superintendent, stated that 29 patients were admitted to the hospital during March slid that 32 were discharged and 3 died, and 14 remained in the hospital. Ten 1 perations were performed under anaesthetics. There wero 19 out-patient: receiving attention. 17 being returned soldiers- They would be una! 1 ■> to take any more ear,es from ITawera in the isolation ward, as ic already contained 4 diphtheria and 1 scarlet fever. Nurse Griffiths had returned from sick leave and Sister Ilealy left on the 7th inst.

A. Gray, health inspector, reported that one ease of scarlet fever and one case of !iphtheria had occurred in the Stratford borougV Both patients had been removed to the hospital and premises disinfected. Xur.se A. Old, Whangamomona, stated ahe had given attention to 0 cases since last report, and enclosed fees (£7 lfls 6d) collected. GEXEPiAL. Word was received in town to-day that Lieut. Edmond Malone, eldest son of the late Licut.-Colonel W. G Malone had died in London. He had heen reported dangerously ill, and his death was reported to have occurred on 2nd inst. The late Edmond Malone left with one of the earlier contingents and had been wounded. Deceased was a married man. Mr. J. Masters, J.P., occupied the bench for a short period when a middlea?ed :nan named Wood was charged with neglecting to maintain his wife at Ohutu, Taihape, since March. Wood was arrested fcv Constable Potter at Whangamomonn. Sergeant Dale stated that the police knew nothing of accused, hut ni'Kcd that he be remanded to appear at Taihape on the l'2th inst., and the order was made. Yesterday afternoon Mr. ft. Mclv Morison, whilst crossing Broadway, collided with a gig and was brought to the gro'ind. He was sheltering under an umbrella and dM not notice the approach of the gig. Fortunatelv, although a b t shaken and bruised, no bones were broken, and in a few days he should be Ins old self once more.
