PALESTINE.
TWO VERSIONS OP BRITISH OPERATIONS. London, April 7Turkisli communiques state: The English advance east of Jordan became a cotflplcte defeat. Our troops advanced victoriously, indicting heavy casualties on the enemv, who tried to retire along an impassable road. The enemy's resistance was everywhere broken. We reconquered Es Salt after a hattie and advanced o n the Es Salt-Jericho road. Our artillery fire and cavalry charges forced the enemy reinforcements to fly in disorder. We persistently pursued fhs er.emy and readied the Jordan. The English, whs still occupy a position anions the hills east of the river, left many dead and wounded on the road.
The War Office comments: The Turkish version is exaggerated and distorted. Our operations east of the Jordan were in the nature of a successful raid, after which we withdrew. We inflicted considerable losses and took 700 prisoners. General Allenby's only indication of energetic Turkish pursuit was on April 1, when a small body attacking the rearguard was beaten off.
