A.SHIRKER SHOWS FIGHT. ' By Telegraph—Press Association. WeUington, April 8.. Acliibald King, described by the polici as an absolute shirker, was fined £lO or two months' imprisonment on a charge of resisting the police. It was stated in evidence that he notified to attend a medical examination o n February 27.. 1917, but went back to the bush, where ho had sheltered! since. When the police reached his housa at Maheno Bay, King was seen near a hedge with a light axe in his hand. Ha said he would not go to camp and would give the police a go for it. When he> made a hostile demonstration the poliea rushed him and secured the axe' after 3} brief struggle. J QUESTION OF DUTY ON TRANSFER; Wellington, April 8. i ( Argument in the case Inchcape v. The point at issue is the amount of duty payable in respect of the transfer of the Union Steamship Company shores t<» Lord Inchcape and others, the tion for which was partly cash and part iy certain stock in the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, onj the value of the stock transferred.
Appellants contended that the duty; should have been assessed on the money consideration only and the transfer of shares could not be treated as a convey ance of sale. . Eleven other* found on the premises were fined £4, aa other was fined £l, and one was di* charged. SAVINGS BANK BUSINESS. I Wellington, Last Night. The Postmaster-General has furnished the following particulars of savings bank business for February. During the peridd of February 1 to 15, deposits amounted to £740,514, and withdrawals £640,227.; ■During the remainder of the month the deposits were £754,569 and withdrawals £411,109. Totals for the month were: Deposits £1,495,083, and withdrawals £1,057,330, an excess of deposits ovei withdrawals of £437,747. The result inay be considered very satisfactory, and compares favorably with the business in February 1917, which was as follows; Deposits £1,352,678, withdrawals £980,« 039, excess of deposits over being £372,630. COALMINERS AGAINST STRIKE Auckland, Last Night. Information has been received that the men at the Waipa, Pukemiro. and Taupii'i mines in the Waikato, on Friday took a ballot on the question of strik« ing. It is stated that a large majority favored continuing work. The ballot came as a surprise to the proprietors, as. relations for some time have been friendly. Recently a conference was held at Huntly between the men and the employers regarding certain matters, at the request of the former, and at the conclusion the men expressed satisfaction, A telegram from Huntly states, that it is reported locally that the voting was 60 in favor of strike, and ISO against the strike. It is believed that the voting at Pukemiro was solid against striking.
