HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Hawera, County Council met on Saturday. Present: Crs. ,T. IS. Murtiock (chairman), R. J. Linn. E A. Washer, T. Winks, G. Wiilliams and C. C. Tarrant ' CORRESPONDENCE. The Minister of Finance revuostwl ffce Council to assist in everv possible way to raise the war loan. The chairman remarked that he had no doubt all would do their utmost to carry out the wishes of the Minister. Jas. Newton, Inspector of Quarries and Mines, desired information as to amount of stone quarried, and name of rock, the purpose for which it is won and used during ihe vear 1917.-Information to lie forwarded. 'ihe Minister of Marine notified the Council that he had approved of closing the Waingongoro beach against the removal of gravel from May 1 to Oetob-' er 1 in each year.—Received.
The Hawera County Electric Company, Ltd., stated that they found the county road at the power station, Normanby, was not iu accordance v.'itii legal purveyed road, and encroached upon their land. They desired to build a cottage at the power station and requested permission to erect same on the northern side.. —Left to riding members to report. .T. H. Baker, South Road, Hawera, complained of a fence with gate across the Matai-Maroki road, near Mr. Duckworth's woolshed. Sheep and cattle were herded there, in considerable numbers, and the writer's fences suffered accordingly. He desired the Council to have gate and fence removed. The chairman stated that Mr. Duckworth had spoken to him about hie fences and the necessity for having a gate. He had told Mr. Duckworth that it would be necessary to get the Board's permission first, and apparently the work ha' 3 been done. The Board had the power to order its removal and he moved in that direction.
Cr. Linn secondefl. After some discussion the chairman withdrew his motion in favor of an amendment leaving the request to the riding member to report upon. J. A. Kennedy, Normanby, desired Council to reconsider his application for increased frontage to his property Hirstlands. He had only ten yards which made it very inconvenient for dealing with stock.
The chairman stated that this was an instance where a road had been opened up, and then fallen into disuse, and in consequence of there being no traffic a portion had been fenced off. He thought that instructions should be given to remove the fence. In deference to CrLinn, who was not aware the matter was coining up, he (the chairman) movi'd that consideration of the matter be deferred to the next meeting. FOREMAN'S REPORT. Mr- A. Muggeridge, County Foreman, reported as follows: Tihi Road.—There lias been about ten chains of this road *metallc4 from the Mere Mere road westward" taking in the hill and the bad flat at the bottom. Mere Mere road-—A start has been made with the metalling of the gap on this road and a distance of iibout twelve chains has been done leaving 27 chains to nietal. Main Soutli road, Mokoia The scarifying, regrading, metalling and tar grouting is now finished from the borough boundary to the top of the Tangahoe lull.
Main South road, Hawera A start will bo made repairing and tarring this road. The crusher is now in position fmd will soon be ready for work. Matangara road.—The cutting alongside of Mr- Brewer's property towaras Taiporohenui has been graded. The bottom ia very soft —the formation is of a soft cheesy white clay, and it will soon have to be metalled or it will become invoassable during the coming winter. Hauling Engine.—On the chairman's instruction.; I inspected an engine at Maungatiwhiri, owned by Mi. Reed, and purchased same for £l5O provisionally that a certificate for one hundred pounds pressure was produced- It has been standing in a shed for th/> past iSo years and has not been inspected. Tt is practically a new engine and was in first class eonditon as regards fire box, tubes, etc. It is a very suitable machine for the purpose that it is required for having a very large circular fuel box, which will burn almost any kind of fuel and should cost nothing as far as that is concerned except carting it along the beach. Tar.—Some arrangements will soon have to be made for getting a supply of tar for next season. The present stock is about twelve thousand gallons which will all be used on the Main South road. Report received.—Regarding the tar the chairman stated that the Council was in negotiation for further supplies.
