PERSONAL.
The London correspondent of the Auckland Star states that the Rev. J. S. Sullivan, N.Z.C.D., has left the Expeditionary Force owing to ill-health. A Melbourne message states that Sir William Irvine, ex-Premier and Attor-ney-General, has been appointed Chief Justice of Victoria. A Sydney message states that the Governor-General presented Nurse MCameron, of the New Zealand Nursing Service, with the insignia of the Royal Red Cross, first class. The Rev. E, 0. Blamires, of Hawera, who has b°en transferred to Hamilton, was with his wife tendered a send-off at Hawera on Thursday evening, and presented with a purse of sovereigns, various speakers, including the vicar of St, Mary's Church, paying tributes to the excellent work Mr. Blamires had done (luring the few years he had heen in Hasvera. Gunner P. G. Blanehett, of New Plymouth, who left with the 13th Reinforcements, and went through all the fighting since the Somme with hig battery, had the misfortune in January to receive a kick from a horse that caused a compound fracture of the leg. He is now at Brockenhurst 'hospital, and making good progress. For a time he was an inmate of the 2nd Australian Hospital in France, and writing to his people, savs he couldn't say enough in praise of the Australian nurses, wfyo were Irindnoss itself.
The; death occurred yesterday morning, after a somewhat lengthy illness, of Mrs. Fookes, widow of the late Mr. A. C. Fookes. The late Mrs. Fookes was born in Luddenden, Yorkshire, England, and came to New Zealand <iC years ago, settling at onee in Sew Plymouth, from the same house, which was then her father's residence, as. that in which she died. Excepting for tho period during which the late Mr. A. C. Fookes was Mayor of New Plymouth (1878-9), the deceased lady took little part in public matters, though she was very widely known throughout tho district. Her deaih will be mourned by a very large circle of friends. Of the family of six sous and ffve daughters still living, two sons (Dr- E. F. Fookes ,and Mr. 11. A. Fookes) and throe daughters (Misses Fookes, 8, and Mrs. P. Fitzherbert) reside in New Plymouth.
