THE WEST COAST MURDER.
STATEMENT LEFT BY EGGERS. The Minister for Justice, the Hon. T. M. Wilford, was asked at Christclrarch ■whether it was intended to give out to the public either the statement prepared by Eggerß ia the condemned cell, or the clandestine letters intercepted by the gaol staff, in which is stated to have admitted the crime for which he was executed. Mr. Wilford replied that he had not yet read Eggers's statement and could sot say whether it should be given out for publication. As for it and the letters it waa not customary to allow such things to be published. Mr. Wilford's interviewer suggested that in view of Eggers's persistence in denying the actual shooting, the letters in which he was said to have admitted the crime ought to be made public. Mr. Wilford replied that he would consider the matter. The Minister was also informed that Eggers on the scaffold had specially requested that his statement should at lest be shown to Mr. Hunter, counsel assigned for his defence. Mr. Wilford 3aid that, as far as he could remember, the sheriff, in his note of what Eggers had said at the last, had. not mentioned this request. However, he would have to consider the matter in all its bearings.
