THE NATIONAL DEBT- " LABOR PARTY'S SCHEME. FOR WIPING OUT LIABILITY. London, April 3The Independent Labor Party Conference at Leicester debated the most equitable method of wiping out the National Debt. Mr. .Towett. M.P., proposed an Act whereby all persons whose wealth was above a certain level should be deemed dead and pay death duties on a graduated scale. THE RED TRIANGLELOSSES DURING RETREAT, London, April 3. The Y.M.C.A. lost eighty canteens and recreation huts during the retreat. The staff destroyed the stores when no longer able to use them. The losses totalled £IOO,OOO. TREATMENT OF PRISONERS. ~ THE GENOWER. CASE. CORRESPONDENCE PUBLISHED. London, April 3. A White Paper contains the correspondence between the Foreign Offce and Germany regarding the death of a seaman, Genower, who was taken prisoner in the Jutland l&ttlc and died at Brandenburg. According '.o his fellow-prisoners, Genower and others were confined ; n a hut which took fire. They demanded to be permitted to escape, but the sentry dared not open the denrs until lie received orders- Genower broke a window and leaned out, w'leriifon the sentry bayonetted him in the chest. All the occupants of the 'nit feiisbed in the flames. The guard held back would-be rescuers. Germany declared that tile bayonetting story was untrue, despite the corroboration, and stated that Genower died of burns. PRICE OF WOOL FIXED. London,. April 3. The War Office has fixed the price of the British wool clip for 1918 at 60 per cent, about the average for JuneJuly, 1914.
