On Monday last the Hon. G. VV. Russell, Minister of Public Health, proceeded from I'rankton to Kawhia, where ha was tendered a luncheon by the settlers, subsequently opening the new cottage and maternity hospital for that district. In his speech the Minister indicated that the institution was to be regarded as a recognition of the responsibility of hospital boards to the settlers of the outer districts. The building would be used for three classes of cases—(l) maternity (■2) accident, and (3) observation cases of infectious diseases. Owing to the war, a very large number of medical men 'had been withdrawn from practice in the Dominion, and the establishment of institutions of this class, which would be staffed by nurses possessing both medical and maternity qualifications, would go a long way towards removing the disqualifications under which the country settlers wc.ro at the present time passing.
