MESSAGES FROM FRANCE AND ITALY. j THK NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS. Received March 31, 5.5 p.m. London, March 20. The French and T + alin»i Premiers have sent messages of admiral ion at the brav cry of British soldiers, and confidence in their v'otory. There were crowded intercession services throughout Britain. The Bishop of London, when preaching, announced that the Government had asked him to appeal for 30,000 women to replace the men that the Government wanted for food production, but cannot now be spared.
Therefore, the executive of the New Zealim' War Contingent Association has considered Mr. Rhodes' proposal to detach the Red Cross from contingent operations. Mr. Rhodes has intimated that he advised Lord Liverpool to terminate the contingent's control of the Red Cross. The totter desired greater prominence. Several members of the exeeutiv warmly rsented the contingent's dismissal. It had carried out the work better lhan Canada or Australia. No force had been better looked after than the New Zealanders, and there was absolutely no need for a change.
Sir Thomas Mackenzie, who was presiding, made a suggestion for an altcrtion of the title to the Red Cross Contingent Association, which was preferable to dislocating an excellent organisation. The change was sought because information as to its working was not being properly circulated, although Colonel Moorhouse had been kept fully informed. Sir Thos. Mackenzie added that General Richardson and Colonel Parkes were entirely satisfied with the past work. It was dangerous to change + he machinery when it was working efficiently. A committee was appointed to confer with the Red Cross Committee.
