TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FIRST DAY'S PLAY. The 13th Taranaki golf championship meeting opened on the New Plymouth Club's links at Waiwakai'ho on Saturday morning, and will be continued to-day and to-morrow. This tournament has of late years become so popular that it attracts players from all parts of the North Island. With the links in such excellent playing order as tiie.y are now, excellent rounds should be returned, ami the club should have a successful gathering. Tiie different competitions have drawn some 5o competitors, and Intel the local ciubs supported the meeting as in previous years the entries would have been much larger. The visitors include three players from Wellington, six from i'almerston North, one from Hamilton, \\ averley one, l'atea two, Ilawera one, Lllliani three, and lnglewood four. The ladies, for whom matches have been arranged on each day, have entered some 17 competitors. Whilst the play on botli Saturday morning and afternoon was devoted to the qualifying rounds for the championship, it also embraced a medal handicap, which was won'by .Mr. D. Pryde, of Feildiug'. with 170—12—104.

In addition to tiiis the 0-hole putting course was well patronised, and the best scores returned were, 17 by four players. There were numerous visitors at the clubhouse, and the fine vieiv obtainable was grea'jiy admired The management of the tournament was all that could be desired. Mr. W. 11.
