Nevertheless, the latest news shows that the German advance is slowing .down. Between the Scarpe and the Cojeul Stream Von Bulow failed to make thij least impression on the British defence. Tuesday's advance nowhere reached a great depth. The indications are that the German | infantry is getting ahead of the artillery, despite the excellent weather | which makes the task of moving guns comparatively easy. Tims far the Germans have used, about 85 divisions, compared with 30 British and two (French with a few American corpsi Hindenburg's most desperate efforts to push to Amiens are meeting with most stubborn resistance. Airmen are borribing Amiens nightly. THE SUPER-GUN. , New York, March 27. Mr. Hudson Maxim say» he is able to build a gun to shoot from London to Paris, but he doubts the value of freak artillery. fr The editor of the Scientific American says that a long range could be obtain* ed by lengthening the gun to 150 feet and using slow burning powder. It could not fire mora than 25 accurate shots. RESERVES TURN THE TIDE. London, March 27. A French communique states that the enemy is everywhere held, Paris, March- 27. The Under-Secretary for War states that powerful British reserves are arriving on the battlefield, and that only a few French divisions arc engaged. M. Clemenceau declares that if the Germans pan be held for another fortyeight hours their offensive will be checked. New York. March 27. Semi-official advices received in Washington state that the Austrians are transferring large calibre artillery from t4« Russian front to the west front. American headquarters reports that the Americans are heavily shelling the German positions, thus preventing the Germans detaching troops to participate in the big offensiv#.
