SERIES OF HEAVY ATTACKS
VIGOROUS COUNTER-BLOWS. WJACTICALLY RESTORE THE SITUATION. deceived March 28, 11.55 p-ra. London, March 28. Sir Douglas Haig reports: The battle tfas renewed in the morning north and south of the Somme. There was intense fighting durrng the day from south of PoiSeres to north of Ablaingebill. Last iiight'e unsuccessful attempt to drive in our line south of the Somme was followed this morning by a series of heavy attacks in the neighborhood of Pozierea and northward. All tlie enemy's assaults at Pozieres were heavily beaten off.
Our tine was maintained further north flaring the earlier part of the day, despite the great prefigure of. large forces, tat, fresh attacks developing later, bent back our line for a short distance.
latest reports show that cotuiterftttacks completely restored the situation.
Fierce fighting resulted from a number of determined attacks between the Bomme and Ancre and north and south of Albert. The enemy forced his way Into part of our position south of Albert. Counter-attacks regained the ground Completely, and we repulsed further attacks at this point during the afternoon. We drove back repeated attempts of {he Germans to debouch west from 'Albert, inflicting the heaviest casualties. The enemy attacked in the. afternoon fn great strength at Bucquoy and XblahiZeville, and gained a footing in the latter- At all other points he was beaten off with great loss. Our troops again fought magnificently and heavily threw the enemy back all along the front, despite the most determined Attacks and superiority of numbetis.
