GERMANS CROSS THE ANCRE
BUT ARE DRIVEN BACK gOUOTER-ATTACKS RESTORE HORXmOQURT AND CHIPILLY, GERMANS OCCUPY ALBERT. Reeeived March 28, 8.15 p.m. London, March 27. The Press Bureau states: Our troops during the night were pressed hack, a short distance on both banks of the Setqme. We early this morning were holding the line, approximately Pozieres, Harbonnieres, Sailly, Lesec, Mericourt, and Lftbless, thence to the Ancre, to the railway embankment south-westward of Albert. The Germans occupy Albert. ' The Germans on Tuesday afternoon crossed the Ancre, near Mcsnil. Our counter-attacks drove them back across the river. The position is unchanged northward of this noint.
We this morning counter-attacked northward of the Somme, between the angle of the Ancre and the Somme, recapturing Morlancourt and Ohipilly. Simultaneously we advanced our line northward of the river to Poyart. Fresh Guards divisions were brought up and taitacked n the neighborhood of Bueqnoy, but made no impression. The enemy made a number of other heavy attacks to-day ncjrthwnrd anil southward of the Somme. The latest information is that they were heavily repulsed. | The French are heavily engaged westward of Roye, and were forced to give Innie ground, but reinforcements are arriving. *

Sdcefved March 2S. 11 p.m. New York, March 28, TLorli Reading has received a message from Mr. Lloyd George stating it is impossible to exaggerate the importance of America sending reinforcements to France at the earliest passible moment. The message says: "Time is vital. We aje at the greatest crisis of the/most momentoUß battle in history, but buoyed by the knowledge that America will neglect no effort to hasten on her troops. Our army lias been forced to retire, hut is facing the . situation with splendid courage,and resolution. ' '
