TL'i:;.' TCL'MC'S. (P.y 'Mohuoa.'') The Mister ice-tings are now the chief lopes of interest, and, judging by the necei)iai:ee.i received for the various gatherings, excellent :q:ort is promised. The carnival open:; on Satuuiav, when theAuckland and Puvertoii Clubs will commence their meetings. The same two chilis will race again on Monday, and, in addition, the Feild'ng. Canterbury. Waiir.ato Plains. Waipukurait and Soutli Canterbury Club.; will unfurl their rings. Canterbury and Wilding will conclude the carnival on Tuesday.
For Taranaki .sportsmen the Waimafe Piains Trotting Club's annual gatheringis to be h-dd on the llawcra racecourse on Easter Monday. An improved class of horse has been attracted by the generous stakes oli'ered, and large lields should be the ordcx of the day.
The Wairnate Plains Cup should be a race worth going a long way to see. Eighteen have been paid up for, including Lord Lytton (who scored so easily at Wanganui), Joan of Arc, August Child and other well-known harness horses. Fair Puritan, on the limit, may take a lot of catching. The Futurity Stakes will be contested by a small field, and if Queen Chimes is brought up for the race she will be a prime favorite. The minor events have tilled well, and the handieapper appears to have concealed the winners well. The Weaver, Todd Bells, Quadroon and Clil'i should run well in their engagements.
Parisian Diamond now ranks as favorite for the A.fi.C. ICaster Handicap, and it is reported that 11. (!ray has secured permission to rid;; the Charlemagne JI gelding in place of ..Royal Irish. On recent form it is hard to pick anything to beat the favorite.
Frank Flynn went north on Monday to ride St.yrax in his Ellerslie engagements. The Hawera horse will require to show improvement on his Wunganui form to have a chance either over the small stickii or over country.
It was not surprising to see so many of the top weights pulled out of the Feilding Cup. Mr. J. K. Henrys was too harsh on the good horses, sacrificing them in-order to give a lot of very moil crate horses a chance. Toatere is now left in the place of honor, and with 8.11 seems 1 to have been given a great chance. Toatere and Multifual should divide favoritism. Gray will probably ride Toatere. The Mangaone Stakes bears an open appearance. Chimera is one of the most discussed candidates, but what is wrong with Staccato? The latter has a nice handy weight, and is good round sharp turns.
Colorado, Ibex, Gipsy Gem and Turangapito have been showing great form lately, and will be in the limelight at Feilding. , Biplane is breaking watches at Riecartem, anjLwill add to his winnings next week. - The defection of Killard from the Great Autumn Handicap was a windfall for the layers. Tressida is nicely treated in the Eden Handicap at Ellerslie, and should act better on a hard track.
Lowry's elect look like taking a lot of settling in weight-forage events at Ellerslie.
The crowd engaged in the Nelson Handicap is not a very classy one, and Paddington Green may carry his 9.0 with distinction.
An exchange states that all is not well with the Easter candidate, Vagabond.
Ditto is one of the favorites for the big hurdles at Ellerslie, but Gluetanus and Otter may prove better stayers over two miles.
Impediment is not meeting anything very warm in the Great Northern Oaka.
