MOTHER COUNTRY.
NATIONAL CHEMICAL AND METAL •BANK KtttMED. Received March 2C, 7.30 p.m. London, March 23. The formation of a national Metal and Chemical Bank, with a capital of a million, is practically completed- Richard Tilden Smith is one of the principal promoters, and other powerful financiers are concerned.
The present season has toeen an excellent one for tomato-growers in th« Hutt Valley. The crop has been a good one, and the prices realised satisfactory (says the Post.) A peculiarity is that the- principal market has been found in the up-country towns, one grower stating tlmt most of his tomatoes had gone to New Plymouth. When it was remarked that it was strange that country towns should not grow their own, it was explained that the market in the country was not large enough to encourage large growers and small growers were apt, through want of attention, to fail in their efforts. Then, too, tomatoes required o fairly long season, and the short dry season in Taranaki was unfavorable to their growth. •}st[ai no£ oaiS ip> %\ SIOZVK *W pus uos «( ivnw taoi )i
