THE MINERS' AYARXED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. AVellington, March 2,"i. The following telegram, relating to the strikes in the West Coast coal mine.-; hag been sent to the local representatives of the Labor Department ou Ihe scene of the troubles by the head of the department here:— "I am directed by the Prime Minister to inform the officers of the Coal .Miners' Unions who are on strike as follows: The action of the coal miners who stopped work at certain mines has already greatly interfered with the industry of the Dominion and with the essential duties of the New Zealand (lovernment. Such action by men working under awards is unlawful under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, and it is also a serious offence against the new regulations. The Prime Minister trusts the men will return to work at once. If not lie greatly regrets that it will be the imperative duty of the Government to direct that proceedings be taken without further delay under the War Regulations. Please inform the principal officers of the union accordingly at once. CHASE AFTER ALLEGED THIEF. AVhangarei, March '25. After an exciting chase lasting from March 16 to 2-t the police captured the Dalmatian Vladimir Oarevieh, who is charged with the theft of property and money amounting to £SO. Carevich escaped from custody at, Kaitaia on the lfith, making his way south. By the combined action of tiie police mid settlers he was captured at Mamigatupere this morning when making for Dargaville. It is alleged that lie stole two horses on his way, but offered no personal violence. k He was nearly captured on Saturday night 3iear Whaugarei, but escaped by a jump down a precipice into the bus'h. The South Canterbury Farmers' Union executive to-day resolved that in their opinion nothing less than 7s a bushel would induce farmers to grow wheat sufficient for Dominion requirements.
