OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Ilawera Hordette of Savages gave a concert here on Friday evening, in aid of the "Big Push" at Hawera. The hall was well filled. The programme was "crispy." The takings at the door amounted to £2O, and the returned soldiers' flag was auctioned by Mr. Bishop and brought £sl 15s. Mr. trotter, chairmr.-.i of the Town Board, thanked the visitors for providing the entertainment, and Mr. Spratt- explained the objects of the Returned Soldiers' Club. The gale shook things up generally hero. A number of shop windows were blown in and verandahs loosened, gardens were flattened out, and many trees were uprooted. One side of the street looks as if St. Patrick's Day was celebrated here right royally—bandaged-up windows, bent verandah posts, etc. A quiet wedding was celebrated in the Catholic Church on Sunday, the parties wedlocked being Mr. Oliver Cross and Mrs. Birkett. The Rev. Father Doolaghty tied the nuptial knot. Privates Con. Hickey and Magnus Hughson arrived here on Tuesday evening. What is tho reason for the lapsing of the committee in connection with the Nursing Association'! There is an absolute necessity for ;i committee to take an interest in this l work. It will be a, great pity if this district loses tho services of a nurse through the negligence of the local residents, it is a work of importance, particularly now that we have a resident doctor. The work of the nurse in attending to children and women cannot be measured. At the annual mcejjing of tho Golf Club, Mr. G. Hammond was elected president, Mr. Cleghorn secretary, tho male members appointed a general committee, and the ladies appointed a social committee.
