Probably the moil acceptable were "Kq;c tf My Heart," '•When it Strikes Hume," and '•Spotty.'' Mrs. Wilkes, New J'iyni.-mtii, was accorded a very cordial reception on her lirst appearance before n Str.it.ord audience, and established herself it favorite from her lirst nuuibJr, ' .Mountain Lovers,"' whilst her item, in the second nart, was one of tiie items of the uvening. The Stratford artiste. Mrs. (.' Massey, also received the inevitable encore for her number, "Mother of Men.'' Her sucees: was well merited and the audience would have liked to have heard more from the vocalist. "Roses" was the lirst number conn-ibur-ed by Mrs. Thomas, of Douglas, a lady hitherto a stranger to Slvat'orc, foutiights. The possessor of a very tuneful voice of high quality, sfle quickly won the approbation of her audience, and re eeived an undeniable recall. Mr. Normini P/siy, of New l'lyjiio.iti!. received a very flattering reception, all -tils items being rapturously applauded. "Tiie Parmer's Pride'' and "Son;,' of tiie Po.v" were his openimi numbers, and these suited his light baritone voice to such a decree that the audience stayed the progress of the concert till lie had responded to a double recall. Mr. Tom Hanford's opening item, "The Coming of the King," received a well-merited recall, in response to which he contributed the old favorite, "1 Pear no Foe." Roth his numbers were rendered in the most artistic manlier and fully earned the unstinted applause. Mr. K.'S- Walker is rarclv Lvard on the concert platform, and his number, "Relovcd it is .Viorn," was a most acceptable one. The presence of Mr A. 0. Sturroek at the piano added materially to the success of the evening, and it is safe to say that his pianoforte solos were revel?tions to iiiunv. IJe. had a heavy evening, as besides playing four solos he also proved a most cllicient and sympathetic accompanist. His opening piece, "Mazurka l.e rliotysky," '.rave ample opportunity to shu'.v his ability as an artist at the iiitiHo. Naturallv the audience was delimited with Mr' Prank Ranl'ord's work. It mattered not whether it was the story of Hie Scotsman's first sermon, t-'ie connc.entious objector who 'ates war, or the small hoy's first attempt at word sentences. Mr. Ranford had his audience bubbling with mirth., and when he sang (by request) "All of a Ditherum," that was file condition to which the members oi the audience were reduced. He liad the heavy end of the stick, and proved a great '"anchor man," ami tiie success of the concert was largely due to his artistic ability and theatrical experience. A step-dance, by Mr. J. Androws secured a recall, and"' added further variety to a vvell-balsmced and varied programme. The accompaniments were in the capable hands of Messrs C. 11. Fox and Tom ltanford.
. During an interval Mr. R. Collier submitted to miction the. first cheese nniiie by the Stratford dairy factory, and, the proceeds of this being also for the Red Triangle, bids were so plentiful that when the last bid had been tendered the sum scL'iired by this means was over £54- The door takings were over £iti, and these with the sale of tickets should Stive the Red Triangle Day a stood stiiri. for Saturday's ell'ort. In the dance the numbers on the lloor were so great that dancing in comfort was an effort, but all footed it merrily to the various patriotic airs and old familiar songs introduced by Mr. Fox, who presided at the p'.ano. A splendid supper was provided by the Stratford Dairy Company, who are to be congratulated on the lavish manner in which they catered for the public to celebrate the opening of the new cheese factory recently set running by the. company.
FARMER IN TROUBLE. A sitting of tlie court was held this afternoon, before Messrs C. D. Sole and J. W. McMillan, J.sP. On a charge of cruelty to a calf which fell down a bank and broke a leg, J. Mesehenski, farmer, Wharehuia (Mr. King), was lined £1 and costs £2 10s. A second charge against the same defendant for• neglecting to look after a deformed cow was heard, but the Bench dismissed it, holding there was an element of doubt about the treatment of the cow, and defendant was given the benefit. GENERAL. Two Hawke's Bay residents had a trying time at Mt. Egmont last night. By some means they got off the track and had not returned" Mr. Murphy, guide to Dawson Kails, found the party, and they were able to get hack at 4.30 a.m., much to the relief of their wives and friends. The Tuna picnic passed off most successfully yesterday. The major partof the afternoon was spent in foot-racing for the schoolboys. The single men defeated the married men in the tug-of-war. Mrs. M. M. Knox won a fine penpainted cushion in a competition for the Y.MC.A. funds, which resulted in £2 4s (id being secured- The cushion was a neat piece of work by Mrs. P. Jones, whose lnisband is at the front- A social was 'held in the evening, which took the form of a welcome home to Sergeant A. Reid. Mr. \V. Hathaway made the presentation, an illuminated address prepared by Mr. J. McAllister, accompanying it with appreciative words on the record established by the Reid family. • Dr. Paget has returned from his holidav, most of which was spen\ in the South. Island. Around Picton the fishing was found very good, the doctor and 'his
party enjoying some bijr captures. Dr. Steven has also returned from his short j holiday in the south, and lias again taken up his hospital duties.
