EXCITING SCENES IN MELBOURNE. DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST ARCHBISHOP. • Received March 21, 11 p.m. Melbourne, March 21. There were exciting scenes during the public demonstrations against the Roman Catholic Archbishop Mannix, over the Sinn Feinism and the display of disloyal emblems in the recent St. Patrick's Day procession. Among the crowd' at the Town Hall Sinn Feiri colors were shown. This caused free fights. The action of some who remained seated during the playing oi tiie National Anthem created an angry demonstration. • The meeting resolved to urge the Federal Government to take action under the War Precautions Act. Subsequently delegates visited Mr. Hughes, who promised immediate consideration. Among the resolutions passed by the State Recruiting Conference was one stating that it was desirable to increase the amount paid to soldiers' widows to an amount at least equal to that paid in New' Zealand. PRICE OF TOBACCO. Melbourne, March 20. The retail price of tobacco has been increased by a penny per ounce. PURCHASE OF BACON. Melbourne, March 20. It is announced that Britain is purchasing 2000 tons of bacon monthly. The price has not been decided.
