When the transport arrived at Lyttelton tu-ilay, lo their great disappointment the p"Onle were not allowed on the wharf by the military authorities. The Mayor of Lyttolton, in a speech, mid :■ was an insult to those who had boys coming home, and .i.'i insult to the boys 1 1 -"nselves. Eventually the crowd broke i!.. ~r,;.;h the rope barricade, but the people were quite orderly. Further excitement. was caused by a soldier falling overboard. He was rescued by a relumed soldier, Sergeant Harold llurd, D.C.M.
