HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The New Plymouth High School Board met on Monday night. Present: Messrs D. Hutchcn (in the chair), 11. Trimble, J. S. Fox, R. W. D. Robertson, 8. G. Smith and P. W. Atkinson. The chairman apologised for the absence of Mr. li C. Sladden, and, on his motion, leave of absence was granted to Mr. Sladden crd Dr. E. F. Fcokes.

The matter of arranging for a lease of Mr. Geo. King's house at St-randon was referred to the committee to make tlit best terms possible. Miss J. E. Barr, principal of the girls' school, reported that the total roll number was now 152, 48 of whom were boarders. She had made arrangements \vi*li Miss Monica Lonnon to relieve Miss Baker for three months while the latter went to Wellington for medical treatment. Mr. W. H. Moye's, principal of the boys' school, reported that he had been nwible to obtain any reliable informatirni with reference to Longburn soil for the cricket pitch, and suggested purchasing a quantity of blue papa from the neighborhood of Urenui at a reasonable cost. —It was decided to grant £25 for the purchase of the soil, and the Grounds Committee was requested to supervise the work of laying same.

The chairman reported that, in consequence of a report from Mr, W. A. Cum. nrng, the hoard's architect, ho had ordered certain work to be carried out at the boys' school as a temporary measure.—The architect is to be asked to furnish a report and estimate of the cost of providing a sanitation system at the boys' new school to suit the accommodation of 350 boys.

Mr. Robertson reported that certain gymnasium apparatus had been purchased.

The Taranaki Education Board notifted that an agricultural instructor would be provided as requested at £l4O per annum.

Notification was received that the Railway Department, would pay £450 compensation for part of the Board's Manaia reserve taken for railway purposes. The' appointment of a member to fill Mr. T. G. Hirst's place was left over till next meeting.
