FINE STAMP OF MEN.
STILL COMING TO HAND.
(From Our Own Correspondent). . Wellington, March 17. The standard of the reinforcements keep «p remarkably well," atat'-s an officer from one of the hasp camps in I the war area. "The men coming to | ■hand now may not bo oniile as <wl phvsieally, on the average,' as the early 'reinforcements, but the (Ull'orence if there is any; is very slight. The gr'eat lyuonty of the new men are the right sfiift, well-grown, muscular and hard, awl I think New Zealand has reason to be proud of being able to send forward s.n-h men regularly at this sta«e of the w.u- It would be possible, to draw comparisons in our . favor if comparisons were advisable."
■litis impression from a well-informed source is confirmed by a ■ visit to ilia trsinmg camps in New Zealand. The drafts at preseid in camp, consisting of a mixture o.f volunteers and bnllotted men, contain a few recruits who might be classed- as weedy. Cut most of the m"n are- thoroughly good fighting maleriftl, as far as can be judged' at this s*Mre, and oven the weedy specimens M\Q a tendency to improve very rapidly unlcr training. The physical' training .""•en in the camps has been developed .■remarkably during the war period and hss reached a very high standard of eflk-iencv.
.Attention has been-drawn in Air h'alia I ;to the high percentage of rejections after j the men have reached the war area. I Many thousands of Australian soldiers have, .been sent hack from the depots without having been mar the firing line, simply-because 'they were Unfit for active service. New Zealand is'in no danger of encountering a trouble of this kind.i The authorities are able to make their rejections at this end, since they are not faced V a shortage of recruit's and so need not use poor material to fill-gaps in drafts. A f<>w men are retiirne'l from England medical'v unfit w'tbout having entered the firing line, but the percentage is very small and the eases are due almost invariably to weaknesses or illnesses that bad not developed prior to the men leaving New Z^alapd,
