PRICE OF BREAD.
TO BE FIXED SHORTLY BY THE GOVERNMENT.
(From Our Own Correspondent)
AVellington, March 17,
The Government intends to fix a maxt. mum retail price for bread shortly. The Board of Trado is to meet Wellington roaster bakers on Tuesday to discuss the subject and suggest ee'i'taij arrangements. The variation in the price of. bread at the present time is remarkable. The four-pound loaf is costing Sd in Dunedin, Old in Cbristchm-ch, Od an Pilmcrston North, lOd in Wanganui, and lid in Wellington and New Plymouth, to qijgte a few illustrations. Obviously the differences are not justified or explained by the local variations in the price of flour. The Dunedin price-is for cash trade over the counter. The bakers ought to be ablo to sell more cheaply this way than when they deliver the bread, but as a matter of fact they often make no concession to the csh buyer who collects.his own bread. They average the, price , and make the cash buyer pay for,, the delivery and credit system. Any price fixed by the Government will he for bread sold for cash over the counter. Presumably the maximum price will not. be the some for all parts of the cquatry.
