SERIOUS FOREST FIRE.
REPORTED TO BE RACING. IN MAIN TRUNK DISTRICT,
Reports are current that there is a serious forest fire raging in the Main Trunk district, and that several of the towns have been destroyed. As the gale has destroyed all telegraphic communication, it is impossible to obtain, any verification of the report, but color is lent thereto by the prevalence of heavy smoke in the Wellington district.
Travellers by the Wellington express yesterday state that the city was densely overhang with smoke, which was also very heavy for a considerable distance up the line. In New Plymouth, also, users of tank water yesterday complained of the smoky flavor of the water, while several of the residents of the town were aroused the previous night by the smell of burning, and some even searched their premises for an incipient outbreak, so strong was the 3mell. It is also stated that the M<tin Trunk express was uriable to get through, owing to a bridge having been destroyed. At the time the New Plymouth express passed Marton, the Main Trunk express had not reached thafstation, where it was more than five hours overdue.
