The Opunake Racing Club's annual meeting, which takes place on Monday, promises to be a most successful gathering. The course is in good order, and the acceptances received are first-class. All roads will lead to Pihama. on Monday, and those who are fortunate enough to make the trip -will be sure of a hearty welcome from Mr. P. S. Riley and his sporting confreres. The programme opens with the Handicap Hurdles, I-} miles, for which a good field of nine promises good sport. Cheddar heads the list with 10.13, and his party make no secret of the fact that they fancy his chance. The old fellow has regained his pace, but whether his jumping will aid him remains to be seen. Zetes is a horse of moods, and the public may prefer the chances of an honest customer like Paul Moore. Ju Jitsu is another that may have to be reckoned with. 'The Maiden Plate, seven furlongs, may provide an interesting race between Winfning Shot, Tromboe, and Xemaline

They are a fairly even crowd, and horsemanship may be tlie deciding factor at the finish. The Opunake .Handicap, 1% miles, will be contested by a high-class field. Ten have been paid up for, including Volo and Pampa, and this pair may he entrusted with the bulk of the totalisator investments. Volo has only to reproduce Hawera form to go near winning. The Electric Handicap, five furlongs, has drawn a select little lot, but Pergola and Munition appear to be of a better elass than the others engaged. Genskus has been promising to do big things, but that appears to be the end of it: The Welter Handicap, seven furlongs, bears an open appearance. If White '■Banger goes to the post it should be easy to pick the favorite. The Foremost gelding has been running well of late, and a change of luck is overdue. * The St. Patrick's-Handicap, six furlongs, should see half a dozen rnuners saddled up. Madam Ristori has recent form to recommend her, and Gaycium and Royal Chef are i n good nick. Playoff and Antwerp may not be properly wound up. Of the trio mentioned above Madam Ristori may be made favorite. Eight remain in the President's Handicap, one mile, though possibly scratchings may lessen the number. Lady Beaufort may have the biggest following, jthongh Clavis and Trombone are also good- milers." The programme concludes with the Farewell Handicap, five furlongs, for which a good field should line up. Penalties' may upset calculations, but Munition, Huzza, and Pergola are likely to be well supported. Times were very fast at Tailherenikau on Thursday, and considering the horses running there the track must have been like cinder, and possibly about 3secs.

The absence of Waimatao also helped the layers Poor souls, they have been getting; a good warming up lately. It. was quite appropriate that Battle Song should win the Soldiers' Cap, and no doubt many of the soldiers-in-making took the tip. It will be remembered Chat at Trentham the martially named Form lip, with Private Arthur Olliver in the saddle, was successful in the Camp Handicap. There ia something in a name after all. Benjamin Ueeley, crack jockstcv, appears to be getting into trouble all round, and it 'behoves this same Benjamin to take a pull—literally, of course. Deelev was always considered a very levelheaded person, and it is surprising to see him breaking riding engagements and incurring the displeasure of the "stooards." The Rangitikei annual meeting takes place on Thursday and Friday next, and tho entries include a large number of Taranaki horses. BulU is generally a happy hunting ground for Taranaki-ites, and it is to be hoped that next week's meeting will prov<; no exception. Acceptances for the Waimate Plains Trotting Club's meeting on Easter Monday close on Friday next, March 2-2. Acceptances should be large enough to insure patrons an excellent day's sport on April 1. Lady General has been turned out, and will not race again until next season. The Manawatu Racing Club has generously donated £IOOO "to the Red Triangle Fund, an example that should be copied by kill-sport associations. They say that Ladogeur will next figure on the racecourse as a hurdler. There is good money for good jockeys in 'Stralia. recent WA.T.C. meeting the biggest cheques went to IT. Cairns £99 10s, and W.
