TARAKAKI CHAMPIONSHIP MEET.
... , : ING. SHIELD WON BY CENTRAL. The Taranaki schools championship sports meeting, ruu under the direction of the Ngamotu Seaside Committee, at the New Plymouth Recreation Grounds yesterday, passed off most successfully. There were large entries in all the events over 100 separate competitors taking ' part. The officials had matters well in hand, and are to be congratulated upon the manner in which the programme was carried through, every item being well up to scheduje time. The sports • were contested in the best of spirits and the winners were loudly cheered. The schools represented were Central, West End, Fitzroy, Coastal, Matau, Oaonui, Suburbs, and Waihi, New Plymouth ' High Schools and Technical College. The championship Shield, presented by the Ngamotu Seaside Committee was the great incentive to each school to contend to its utmost limit. The competition is open to any primary or district school in Taranaki, and the shield is held lor one year only by ; the school securing the highest number of points in the 10 championship events. The points awarded are: First prize 4, second 3, third 2, fourth 1, and in the case of a dead heat the points are divided equally between the , two boys. Interest in the shield contest was keen, and the winners, Central (44 ! points), who led West End W HI points, were loudly cheered. During the progress of the sports the Junior Citizens' Band, under Bandmaster McLeod, i played an enjoyable of music. At the eonclUL'sii <>l the events the prizes were presented by Mr- C. E. Bellringer, the local representative of the Taranaki War Relief Association, to whose funds the proceeds of the meeting are to be devoted. Mr. Bo"-ingcr, in a short speech of congratulation to the successful competitors, said he recognised that the development of the sporting instinct had a strong influence on the development of character. He was sure many of the boys at the front had first learned gallantry on the, schools' sports ground. He then, on behalf of the Ngamotu Committee, presented the shield to Mr. R. L. Mcllroy, for the Central School. Very hearty cheers were given for the winners. The prizes, consisting of gold medals for first place, and silver medals for second and third places, were then presented, each recipient being '.oudly applauded.
