ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent). Elthaai, March 14. A large number of Eltlmmites occupying public positions accompanied Mr. Parry, chief Government electrical engineer, and his assistant, Mr. Kissel, to the Patea river yesterday. The main object of the visit was to ascertain the possibilities of utilising it, if favorable, as an auxiliary to the main Waikaremoana hydro-electric scheme for the Xorth Island. The river, which was inspected, runs through Mr. Ilardwick Smith's property, and after taking measurements and general data the party assembled at Mr. Smith's residence, where refreshments were kindly provided. On returning to town the visitors were entertained at luncheon at the Coronation Hotel, where several toasts were honored. In responding to a toast Mr. Parry made some very interesting remarks concerning the potentialities of hydro-electricity. He touched on the Lake Coleridge scheme in Canterbury, and going on to other matters, mentioned that light railways could not be successful unless electrically driven. Regarding what he had seen that day. he did not think ..the power could be used as an auxiliary Waikaremoana scheme, but could be used locally to great advantage.
