MI3KTING OP LOCAL HEAD CENTRE. A meeting of tlie committee of the North Taranaki Head Centre of the lioyal Life-saving Society was lield last night. There were present: Messrs. D, J. .Hughes; (in the chair), R. L. Mcllroy, J. Bennett, W. P. Nicoll and P. A. Schwartz (.secretary). An apology for absence wa9 received from Mr. S. G. (Smith.

Correspondence of a routine character was read and dealt with. The chairman of the Dominion executive of tha society wrote intimating that the Government grant this year would be divided in proportion to the number of awards gained in each head centre's district.

THE TABOR SHIELD. On the motion oi Messrs. Schwartz and Nicoll it was decided to set up a subcommittee to go into the whole matter of the conditions of competition for the Tabor ohickl. Tt way decided that the committee should consist of three members of the local head centre, and that the Hast End, Waitara and Girls' High (School Clubs be asked to elect representatives to the committee. 'lt was tlso decided that the same committee should take into consideration the question of points awarded in connection with the life-saving competitions.

.SCHOOLS' LTFE-,SAVING COMPETITION. The examiner (Mr. N. A. Christensen), in the course of his report, in connection with the school;: life-saving competition, said: Quite a number of points were lost by competitors, in some eases by quite simple errors on the part of the instructors. Taken as a whole, however, the work was of a fairly high order. At Eltham the water work was very good, but the land drills were incomplete ill detail, and, in places, inclined to be ragged. At Ilavera, also, the instruction v.-as po»r. and t!/ii was reflected in the land drills and Water work. At Elthatn and liawera the diving for an object was particularly good. At New Plymouth tiie Central No. 1 and No. 4 teams and the Wesl End No. 2 team performed exceptionally well, though the instruction was responsible for hiost of the points lost. The work of the Chetwode School was characterised by smartness throughout, as was that of the Boys' High School, though the boys' swimming, with one exception, was somewhat ungraceful. The W'area pupils made a creditable showing, considering the disabilities under which they have been instructed. In the. filial tests the general work showed much improvement. Particularly good work was done by the following competitors, whose individual points were the best obtained during the final tests, 11. iweedale being the only competitor to obtain the maximum points in water Mr. N. D. Day (instructor; Central No. 4), IS points out of 20; <Miss Z. Saxton (Chetwode No. 1), 10S|- out of 110; 11 Us M. Smart (West End No. 2), 88 out of 90; Master H. Tweedale (Central No. 4), US out of DO.

AWARDS. The awarding of -the following certificates in connection With the schools' competition, was approved: Elementary Certificates. Central School: Claude Hawkins, Eugene Amor, Robert Bergo, Edward Lambert and Rugby Wilson. War.ea School: Elmer iones and Herbert Donald. GENERAL. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. J. Gordon for the use of a motor cycle for the examiner in the schools' life-savintr to go to Hawera.

Votes of sympathy were passed to Miss Mei suae and. Mr. Christensen on account of indisposition. , thanks were accorded Messrs! Christensen and Schwartz, school teachers and otiisrs who had done a good deal to promote the success of the schools' me-saving competition. I.he secretary reported the gross proceeds from the finals of the schools' lifesaving competitions amounted to £5 9s Mr. E. W. Atkinson, Sentry Hill, was elected a, member of the society. A committee, consisting of Messrs D J- Hughes, Bennett, Mcllroy, Schwartz, Bullmns and Smith, was sot up to consnler ways and means of improving the financial position of the head centre Accounts amounting to £'2 14s were passed for payment.
