SHIPPING OUTLOOK, GLOOMY.

AMERICA FEEDING THE ALLIES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, March 11.

The shipping outlook is still gloomy. There may be an improvement presently, but at the moment it appears, that tliere is going to be serioiis difficulty in.moving produce, particularly butter and cheese, during months to come. Tho Government of the United States is making vigorous efforts to provide increased quantities of foodstuffs for ■ sport to Britain and France. A ship can tako several cargoes across -the Atlantic in tho time that would be occupied by one voyage to New Zealand and back. These are 'facts that are of direct interest to this country, since the British Food Controller has indicated plainly that the necessities of the United Kingdom must override sentiment. He preferred three cargoes of American foodstuffs to one cargo of New Zealand foodstuffs.
