Mr. C. Jackson informs ine thai tiie Mountain House is now in very good order tor receiving visitors. Tim roads to tile house are in splendid condition, whilst the new caretakers, Air. and Airs. iMcJJonaJcl, are making quite a name for themselves for their care and attention to tourists. Visitors ate arriving daily now. The band will probably pui a day in inert: during Easter. Captain W. H. Hawkins, invalided home, had a rousing reception here whilst passing through on Saturday evening. There was no time for spaeciimaking, but the clieers and hand-shak-ing must have been very pleasant to our soldier and politician. The Plummet [Society is established here, and membership is growing. The president (Airs. A. \V. Budge; has received tiie following donations towards the nurse lund; Alesdames V. .Nolan (Te Wera) £1 Is, E. Alan'cll £l, H. Ji. Abraham and C. Perm is, Hartley and It. Dingle -is lid, 11. Good and K. Ji. White is each. The takings at the tea-rooms on Saturday amounted to £i> Ss, and the Mart £4 10s. Airs. Gocd has also received £1 from ''Friend" for the Ladies' Patriotic Committee, who run these rooms every Saturday. Those who have produce, poultry, sweets, etc., arc invited to send their goods along and the committee will turn them into good money, lihiee its inception the committee lias j raised a very large sum, which has been placed to tiie benefit of several funds,, vvli'ilst liw sewing guilut connected with the committee Imve also provided raiment for Belgians, British dependents, etc. The Red Cross, Lady Liverpool, and Wounded Soldiers Funds arc among the objects that have received assistance. Those who have a few books, etc., that they have no need of are notified that parcels of this nature will be gratefull* received by the committee.
Preparations for the Red Triangle Day 23rd inst., are well forward. Air. 1 . Harry Penn is identifying himself with tiie movement, ar.d hits associated with him several ladies and gentlemen who may be relied upon to make a thorough canvass on that day. Those who recognise the value of the Y.MC.A. need ;iot wait for the 23rd to send in thejr contributions, but will be doing good service by sending their donations at once. Next week the Stratford Dairy Company's concert and dance will be held in tbo. taivn hall. A fine programme lias been drawn up, the best of ontsde talent having been secured. Whilst the entertainment is to mark the progressive step of the company in possessing one of the most modern cheese factories in New Zealand, the receipts will bo handed to tho Wounded Soldiers Fund. j Easter is close at baud, and one wonders what to get for suitable gifts. There is no need to worry. You can present vour soldier with the Ucan haircutter, the young lady with a bangle or wristlet watch, the maid with a book, and the student with a fountain pen. The fretful child will fret no more with tt toy, and tired mother will be pleased with some of the Doulton ware, and father will forget to growl if you purchase tobacco, pipes, or cigars from C.
